Bird Studies Canada

SWO -–
Bird Studies Canada

When it comes to teaching youth and the community about Canada's wild birds and how to conserve their habitat, Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is no stranger. TD Friends of the Environment Foundation is equally passionate about protecting our wildlife while educating the public and it is for this reason that TD FEF is once again supporting BSC in their Bird Science Environmental Education program.

For the first time ever, Grade 6 students from Norfolk County are taking part in BirdQuest- a one year-long, integrated enrichment program designed to engage student's interest and focus beyond a single field trip experience by providing monthly educational opportunities for scientific inquiry-based research, citizen science focused on birds, and curriculum-linked programming. Children have the opportunity to use hands-on tools such as binoculars to explore and learn about a variety of different bird species and have an interactive learning experience.

Thanks to funding dollars from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, each classroom has received a BirdQuest Resource Kit which will aid in helping students learn about bird population decline, species at risk, and human impacts on the Environment. In addition, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids will allow these youth to reach out and get their communities involved in the annual bird counting event at Long Point where they will also have the chance to see a live raptor presentation.

The Explorers Urban Garden Project – Year Two

BC –
The Explorers Urban Garden Project – Year Two

The Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre is a multi purpose museum featuring local and First Nations History, Paleontology and Children's Galleries as well as traveling exhibits. The centre has been in the community since 1958 and is visited by approximately 100,000 visitors per year. The Garden Project began in the fall of 2009 and was a huge success as a showcase for recycling, water conservation, composting, food safety and security.

TD Friends of the Environment Foundation is proud to support the expansion of the Garden Project as it focuses on heritage varieties of vegetables and planting non edible plants that aid in pest control and soil conditioning. Children will have an opportunity to reconnect to the earth as they learn how to garden without chemicals. This project engages community members of all ages and makes them feel empowered to make better lifestyle choices for a healthier, more vibrant and sustainable community.

Medical Care & Rehabilitation of Wildlife

COR/GTA –
Medical Care & Rehabilitation of Wildlife

The Toronto Wildlife Centre provides emergency medical response to common, vulnerable, threatened and endangered species of wildlife who become sick, injured or orphaned.

Based out of their own wildlife hospital in Downsview Park, the Toronto Wildlife Centre receives animals from all over the Greater Toronto Area, including many from Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill and sometimes as far north as Barrie.

The Toronto Wildlife Centre provides the best chance sick, injured or orphaned wildlife have of receiving care and returning to the wild. TD FEF supports the Toronto Wildlife Centre with funds for food, formula, medical supplies, medicine and other resources to provide rehabilitative care to wildlife.
