Apply for Environmental Funding

Applications for TD FEF funding are accepted online on a year-round basis.

How to Apply

Eligibility Criteria

Please note: All organizations, with the exception of Municipalities, must have a Charitable Registration Number.

We encourage the following groups to apply for TD FEF funding:

  • Registered Canadian charities with a Charitable Registration Number (CRN)
  • Educational Institutions (primary/secondary/post-secondary schools)
  • Municipalities
  • Aboriginal Groups

Projects must take place in Canada
Applications must be received in advance of the project start-date

Focus Areas & Eligible Project Examples

TD FEF's purpose is to promote environmental initiatives benefitting local communities that:

  • Protect the environment and Canadian wildlife
  • Assist young Canadians in understanding and participating in environmental activities
  • Enhance cooperation among Environmental organizations

The following is a list of project examples which may be considered eligible for funding by TD FEF:

  • Recycling/Composting Programs
  • Community Gardening Programs
  • Local Food Initiatives
  • Schoolyard Naturalization & Outdoor Classrooms
  • Public Park & Trail Initiatives
    • Stream clean up and rehabilitation
    • Tree-planting (native plant species)
    • Establishing walking trails
  • Tree Planting and Re-naturalization Programs
    • Tree-planting (native plant species)
    • Urban naturalization (including school grounds)
    • Erosion prevention
  • Protection of Endangered Species
    • Bird or nature sanctuaries
    • Programs which protect wildlife including rehabilitation centers
    • Fish enhancement programs
  • Environmental Education Programs
    • School projects/field trips (linked to curriculum)
    • Youth awareness programs
    • Educational pamphlets/brochures/publications
  • Environmental Research
    • Feasibility studies required prior to environmental initiatives/action
  • Energy Conservation
    • Renewable energy installations
  • Water Conservation

Ineligible Projects

The following are examples of the types of projects which TD FEF cannot fund:

  • Projects taking place outside of Canada
  • Salaries (where salaries represent more than 5% of the amount requested)
  • Administrative or Capital Costs
    • Building campaigns, opening costs/overhead, office equipment, renovations
  • Projects/programs run for profit/business
  • Projects which benefit an individual or private property
  • Landscaping/beautification costs
  • Pledges
  • Operating Expenditures or Deficits
  • Scholarships, grants, bursaries, and awards
  • Groups not broadly supported by the community
  • Controversial Activities (i.e. Naming or Boycotting products or businesses)
  • Lobbying or advocacy activities
  • Mileage or Meal Costs
  • Individual or group travel to destinations outside the region
  • Projects completed prior to application date

Application Review Process

The TD FEF Local Chapter Advisory Boards meet on a quarterly basis to consider grant application requests, with some chapters meeting more frequently. To ensure a timely review of your application, please refer to the following schedule.

After you apply, the primary contact listed on the application will receive two email notifications. The first email will confirm receipt of the application. The second email will contain the funding decision of the Local Chapter Advisory Board. We may also email or phone the primary contact if there is missing information on the application, such as a missing Charitable Registration Number.
