Alberni Inlet Trail Expansion Project receives $7,000 donation from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

Port Alberni, B.C. - (January 8, 2009)Earlier today the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association (AVEA) received a $7,000 donation for the Alberni Inlet Trail expansion project from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

"Our local TD Friends of the Environment Foundation chapter is very pleased to support the Alberni Inlet Trail expansion project, preserving and improving public access to the central island's waterfront," said John Lawson, Branch Manager for TD Canada Trust. "Our chapter's advisory board is made up of customers and employees who live and work in the island community, and so they recognize first-hand the environmental and community benefits of supporting this type of project."

The hiking and cycling trail runs through Port Alberni out to the old Canadian National Pacific Rail trail and beyond to Headquarters Bay. TD FEF's contribution will go towards completing trails between the City of Port Alberni and China Creek, as well as Franklin River estuary to Headquarters Bay.

"Thanks to support from organizations like TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, we've been able to reach our fundraising goal of just over $152,000," said Hira Chopra, Chair of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. "The Alberni Inlet Trail will not only add to the recreational amenities available to local residents, it also supports the region's plans for long-term environmental and economic sustainability."

TD FEF is a unique partnership that brings TD Bank Financial Group, its customers and its employees together to help protect Canada's wildlife and environment.

The central island TD FEF chapter is one of B.C.'s most active, funding more than 220 local environmental projects and educational activities since the foundation's inception in 1990. Local charities, schools and community groups are encouraged to take advantage of funding opportunities in 2009.
