TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and TD employees branch out to conserve Mount Royal’s biodiversity

Montreal, May 30, 2011 - Hundreds of nature-loving TD employees, their families and friends put their shovels to work on Mount Royal yesterday to preserve Montreal’s urban canopy by planting some 300 indigenous trees and shrubs, cleaning up litter and cutting down alien invasive species. TD Friends of the Environment Foundation also presented Les amis de la montagne with a $75,000 donation to help complete the “Mount Royal, A Territory to Discover” permanent exhibit at Smith House.
“This fundamental cause touches our collective future and the future of generations to come,” said Christine Marchildon, Senior Vice-President, Quebec Region, TD Canada Trust. “Thanks to devoted volunteers who work on behalf of our planet, as well as, the commitment of institutions and communities, we can protect our environment and leave a greener legacy to our children.”
The “Mount Royal, A Territory to Discover” exhibit will provide community members with greater knowledge and understanding of the many facets of Mount Royal. Through learning, Les amis de la montagne aim to involve citizens in the conservation and enhancement of the mountain
“The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation has demonstrated exemplary leadership in the promotion of environmental causes at a national level,” said Peter A. Howlett, C.M., president of Les amis de la montagne. “Investments in our conservation and education programs are critical in order to ensure that the next generation is well-prepared to become the stewards of Mount Royal. We thank the Foundation and TD employees for their ongoing generosity.”
TD Green Sunday is organized by Les amis de la montagne and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation in collaboration with the City of Montreal. This is the sixth year that TD employees have volunteered for this activity, planting a total of 3,000 trees. TD FEF has donated more than $1 million to fund 300 environmental projects in Quebec since 1990.
