What TD is Doing

All across the country, Canadians are working hard to make more environmentally friendly choices. TD is too; over the years we have been actively building environmental and social considerations into our core business strategy in areas such as credit and lending, asset management, products and services, and management of our operational footprint.
Our green choices for customers
We're always trying to think of beneficial new products and services to offer our customers, and these include options that address the environment. Our current green choices for customers include:
- TD Global Sustainability Fund. This fund invests in companies that contribute to the world's future sustainability. In addition, a portion of the fund is dedicated to emerging specialists in clean energy technology and resource efficiency.
- Paperless Recordkeeping. Since 2002, more than four million TD Canada Trust banking customers and employees have switched to paperless bank accounts, and more than half of all new accounts opened are paperless. In 2008, TD paperless banking customers saved 104 million pieces of paper — the equivalent of 10,700 trees.
- Green Mortgage and Green Home Equity Line of Credit. Customers are eligible for a 1% discount off the posted interest rate and up to a 1% cash rebate when making ENERGY STAR® qualified purchases. At the time of the rebate, we'll donate $100 to the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
- Green Wheel Auto Insurance Discount. Owning a recognized hybrid vehicle could result in a savings of up to 10% off the total premium when placing automobile insurance with a TD-owned insurance company.
Our carbon-neutral commitment
Did you know TD was the first bank in Canada to make a commitment to be carbon neutral? In fact, TD will achieve its 2010 carbon neutral goal by:
- Designing and operating our branches and corporate buildings in a more energy-efficient manner. Some of our initiatives include lighting retrofits, heating and cooling upgrades, greening our fleet and vehicle programs.
- Investing in clean and renewable energy to reduce TD's carbon emissions associated with
electricity usage:
- In 2010 TD implemented the new green building design standard that uses solar panels to produce 17% of energy consumption. In 2009, at least 20% of the carbon emissions from TD's Canadian operations will be offset by the purchase of renewable power, making TD the largest purchaser of renewable energy among financial services companies
in Canada. In addition, TD purchased more than 240 million kilowatt hours of wind energy to power 100% of its US operations.
- TD branches in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as well as our entire network of 2,600 Green Machines (ABMs) have been operating on clean, renewable energy since April 2009.
- Offsetting our remaining carbon emissions through the purchase of high-quality carbon offsets. Many of these will be obtained by helping schools, hospitals and other non-profits to reduce their emissions through investments in clean technology and energy retrofit projects.
- This year, TD Bank Financial Group (TD) supported a unique partnership with the Munsee-Delaware First Nation in southwestern Ontario and Tree Canada to develop the first forest plantation dedicated to sequestering carbon. 77,000 fast-growing hardwood trees were plated on 48 hectares on the Munsee-Delaware First nation land. The trees are expected to sequester 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over 31 years. In addition, this initiative has created 42 'green collar' jobs for the Munsee-Delaware First Nation community as well as facilitating the development of a green technology certificate program with Fanshawe College.
Recognition for our eco-efforts
Here's how others are noticing TD's unique approach:
- TD was named one of the world's most sustainable companies in the fifth annual Global 100 ranking announced at the World Economic Forum.
- TD Bank Financial Group has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2009 by

- Corporate Knights Magazine has named TD to its eighth annual
